Shima Raising The ‘Bar' At Stud

IN 2002, Dave Gleeson won the Group 1 National Sprint with In The Frame, a bitch he had bought from the famous Victorian breeder Noela Hogan.

She was from the “Portrait” family and after winning that Group 1, Dave knew he had to stick with it.

He then bred a litter by Burst Asunder-Special Portrait and got a bitch called Come Uppance who was going to be anything but came off “third best” in a dog fight.

At stud she produced city winner Messines. Dave Gleeson loved the line and put her to Primo Uno who just happened to be also from the very same “Portrait” family. It produced super stayer Shimaguni.

Dave was back in the big time, Shimaguni winning 21 races and almost $200,000 including Group success.

At stud, Shimaguni became the dam of the great Dyna Tron bitch Shima Song (28 wins, $288,000, G2 Geelong Cup, G2 McKenna Memorial, 2nd G1 Maturity).

On Friday night, Dave Gleeson will be at Wentworth Park to witness the final of the Million Dollar Chase and he and greyhound partner Bob Cummings will be represented by potential superstar Shima Shine (Barcia Bale-Shima Song).

It's been two decades since Dave Gleeson first tapped into the “Portrait” family and here he is chasing a million dollar payday.

Shima Shine has won nine of 11 starts, run a track record at Ballarat, and is one of the hot favourites in the quest for a million bucks.

But also along the way, Shimaguni produced, also by Barcia Bale, a dog called Shima Bar who, in 2017 won the Group 1 Paws Of Thunder and was on his way to super-stardom when he broke a hock.

It stopped in his tracks his bid for such glorious heights. It was just four starts after his Paws victory.

Shima Bar came back to racing, 14 months after his broken leg, won at Geelong and Sandown in four starts, but was injured again and retired to stud.

While undergoing a long, long recovery, Shima Bar mated a handful of bitches and from only six named offspring to date, five have been winners.
Shima Bar is bred identically to Shima Shine. But, he is also in-bred 3×3 to the famous litter brothers Hallucinate and Carnage.

The fact Shima Shine is out of a daughter of Dyna Tron, son of Collision, and is in-bred to Dyna Tron and his half sister Princess Bale, should give broodbitch owners a huge insight into how to successfully mate to Shima Bar.

It would make sense to put daughters of Dyna Tron to Shima Bar … you just might end up with a Shima Shine (and a chance at a million bucks).

Other opportunities for broodbitch owners looking at using Shima Bar would certainly include bitches by Fernando Bale, Buckle Up Wes, Worm Burner, Kilty Lad … all stud dogs with Primo
Uno as their damsire.

The theme here is to duplicate Primo Uno. Fernando Bale's champion son Sennachie is in-bred to Primo Uno.

KIlty Lad's champion son Kayda Shae and very classy daughter Alicante Bouchet are in-bred to the Portrait family.

Primo Uno has done extremely well when linked to Collision (Buckle Up Wes in bred this way) and the cross has worked in reverse via champion bitch Dyna Patty. Collision bitches are everywhere just waiting to be mated to Shima Bar.

With a dog so in-bred as Shima Bar, he is more than likely to excel when mated to bitches that carry completely diverse pedigrees from his own.

This will allow Shima Bar's intense bloodlines to dominate the matings he has.

Remember, champion Orson Allen is by US stud dog KC And All from a litter sister to Barcia Bale (sire of Shima Bar).

Shima Bar also has no Bombastic Shiraz. A VERY interesting mating cross for Shima Bar could be to bitches by Lochinvar Marlow a son of Bombastic Shiraz who has the bitch Who's Who (Balligari-Golden Fox) as his third dam. Who's Who just happens to be the litter sister to Burst Asunder the sire of Shima Bar's third dam.

Bringing in littermates like this can upgrade for racetrack success.

Obviously, the fact Shima Bar has line breeding to the brothers Hallucinate and Carnage, means we “could” mate bitches with a cross of their litter brother Where's Pedro or their half brother Pure Octane. Where's Pedro should come via a SON, Pure Octane via either a son or daughter.

Pure Octane has done particularly well when linked to Hallucinate.

Three of the four male lines in Shima Bar traces directly to Brother Fox. This would mean, Shima Bar could do best by reinforcing the other sire-line found in his pedigree. This is Primo Uno.

But, the Irish cross of Moral Standards in Primo Uno's direct damline is also influential.

Barneys Alarm is from this same family.

He is found in the direct damline of Where's Pedro's son, that wonderful broodbitch sire, El Grand Senor. He is punching way above his weight as a broodbitch sire.
