Zipping Kyrgios Aces Bob Payne Sprint

POWERHOUSE performer ZIPPING Kyrgios never looked like winning Saturday night’s Group 3 Bob Payne Sprint Final (520m) at Wentworth Park.

ZIPPING Kyrgios never looked like winning Saturday night's Group 3 Bob Payne Sprint Final (520m) at Wentworth Park.

But he somehow did in stunning fashion, dropping from the clouds for the most unlikely of large stride victories in the $25,000-to-the-winner feature.

Trained by John Finn, who won the race in 2001 with Winsome Dollars, Zipping Kyrgios charged home down the centre of the track to score by a neck over race favourite Zulu Warlord in 29.80.

Less than two lengths separated the first five runners over the line in the Group 3 affair, giving an indication as to the thrilling nature of the race.

Now a winner at 11 of his 24 starts, Zipping Kyrgios began his career last November with victory in the Maitland Future Stars Maiden (400m).

It's a series that's produced many topline chasers over the years, including TAB Million Dollar Chase winner Good Odds Harada.

And while always considered a powerhouse performer, it was in January that Zipping Kyrgios really announced his arrival, reeling off a dazzling 29.37 win at Wentworth Park leading into the Group 1 National Derby series.

In his last five starts the son of Aussie Infrared has contested the finals of the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg and Group 2 Maitland Cup, Saturday night's Bob Payne success proving third time lucky on the Group stage.

Bred in the purple, Zipping Kyrgios is out of former top bitch Zipping Lilly, which took out the Ladies Bracelet on this program back in 2016.

On what was another red-letter night for the Hallinan family they also annexed the Group 3 Gold Cup (720m) with the Ray Magri-trained Zipping Niseko.

The daughter of Aston Dee Bee staved off a late challenge by rank outsider Sandy Grant to score by half-a-length in 42.32 from her box eight draw.

Early leader Prim And Proper finished another 1 ¼ lengths away in third while race favourite Stanley Road finished off well for fourth.
