Saturday night sees the running of the $250,000 to-the-winner Group 1 Australian Cup Final at The Meadows, a race that's been won by some of the greats of the sport since its inception back in 1958.

For greyhound racing fanatics, the Australian Cup honour roll boasts plenty of household names, with champion sprinters across all eras etched into the record books.

But there's one name nestled away that stands above all else, when back in 2001 arguably the greatest ever greyhound to don a race rug produced an unbelievable performance to claim the Group 1 feature at The Meadows.

The name? The one, the only, Brett Lee.

Lining up from box six for trainer Darren McDonald, the son of Gun Law Osti recorded a brilliant 29.49 to defeat Go Wild Teddy by seven lengths – the then track record breaking time made even more remarkable by the fact no other greyhound on the program broke 30 seconds.

There was freakish. Then there was Brett Lee.

Widely considered the most gifted chaser to grace our tracks, Brett Lee retired with 31 wins from 39 starts (placed the other eight times), before perhaps embarking on what was an even more successful career at stud, in many ways shaping the breeding industry we have today.

A group 1 winner on four occasions, Brett Lee's track record breaking performance to claim the 2001 Adelaide Cup at Angle Park in a mind-boggling 28.88 still stands to this day, a time-standard many industry pundits claim to be "unbreakable."

This Saturday night's Group 1 finale will see another outstanding galloper etch their way into Australian Cup folklore, with eight hugely talented finalists taking their place in the $250,000 to-the-winner event.
