Alberton Park's Derby Win A Timely Pick Me Up

TONI-MARIE Graham and her husband Mark certainly needed the timely boost when Alberton Park led throughout to win Sunday's Capalaba Derby.

Their home bred, by Zambora Brockie from the speedy Lombardy, was hot $1.70 favourite and gave nothing else a chance from box rise to win the Derby in a slick 19.67 over Star Assassin and I'm Peakin.

“Yep,” said Mark Graham. “It was certainly a pick me up for both of us.”

Mark has only just shed a “moon boot” after six months the result of a broken ankle.

And, while on a trip to WA recently, Toni-Marie slipped and fell and broke her shoulder.

She is in a sling for months.

Alberton Park has won eight of 22 and earned $24,000 for his connections.

“We bred and raced the mother, bred and raced the grandmother and raced the great grandmother,” said Mark.

“Lombardy was very fast but she broke down. We had to breed with her.”

She came from a litter that included Group class Mahogany Row and Chanticleer and the brilliantly fast Rimini.

Their dam Le Sirenuse was second in an Ipswich Cup and made the finals of the Brisbane Cup and Darwin Cup. She was also the dam of Qld Derby finalist Rockford.

Darryl McGrath's Indiana Wind dominated the Futurity final to continue her remarkable Capalaba record.

The daughter of Zipping Garth-No Clyde Needed  ran 19.80 to down Saanvi and Scarlatti for her ninth win in 20 starts all at Capalaba for stakes of $30,000.
