Sprint Star Aston Profit Marks Start 100 In Style

SHORT courser Aston Profit marked career start number 100 in the best possible fashion, leading all of the way to claim a memorable victory.

SHORT courser Aston Profit marked career start number 100 in the best possible fashion on Wednesday night, leading all of the way to claim a memorable victory.

The daughter of Barcia Bale and Aston Tara pinged the lids to lead clearly from box two and from there was never challenged, winning by 1.9 lengths in 22.06.

It was her third consecutive win and the 29th of a career that began over two years ago.

"I was so proud of her winning her 100th start," said Jason Sharp, who trains in partnership with his wife, Jessica.

"And the race call was unbelievable, it was very cool."

Aston Profit has been remarkably durable throughout her career, rarely having more than a fortnight between runs. However Sharp revealed that at one stage she seemed unlikely to race at all.

"It was funny, at the start she had real bad scarring on her back muscle and I didn't even think she'd make it, but she's always run with it. She's done so well.

"She's pretty bulletproof, but hopefully she comes on season soon. Ray wants to breed with her and you don't want them having too many starts over 100."

Interestingly, it was the desire to breed that coincided with her resurgence in form which has seen place in each of her last nine starts.

"Ray Borda (owner) asked us to take her off the pill maybe six months ago and said once she comes on season we'll breed with her,” Sharp added.

"Well, she hasn't come on season and she just keeps on keeping on. With her early speed she puts herself in races and we've had a bit of luck.

"To win her 100th race – it's not like she won in a veteran's race, she won it in mixed grade and it's very hard to win at Ballarat, I think it's one of the hardest country tracks to win at."

The Sharps have had considerable success training for Ray Borda with greyhounds including Aston Merit and Aston Lavinia, and with Aston Profit now earning over $86,000 in prizemoney, it's a relationship Sharp is hopeful of growing in the future.

"They're the ones that pay the bills every week because they show up every week. If you had a kennel full of them you'd sleep pretty well at night."
