Mr. Shire Bred For Stud Success

DAVID Brasch delves into the breeding credentials of former hugely talented chaser Mr. Shire, standing at stud at Sires On Ice.

MAGIC Sprite's influence upon the “night of nights” at Wentworth Park on Friday when the running of the $1 million Chase and Sydney Cup takes centre stage, makes him a breeding influence that cannot be ignored.

Magic Sprite (Brett Lee-Glamorous) has made the breeding world sit up and take notice right from the moment he was born such were the expectations held for him.

He was a scorcher on the track and then an instant hit at stud.

But, what interests us most these days is that his sons are proving a huge hit at stud as well, and his daughters are already proving goldmines as producers.

Magic Sprite's son Black Magic Opal has Friday night's $1 million Chase favourite Black Opium.

In the added-money Sydney Cup, Magic Sprite has Boom Down and Radar Gunn chasing the stayer's prize.

What this means is that Magic Sprite, a 2008 whelp who went to China to be a huge stud success as well, is still a dominant force in breeding.

This is absolutely certain to continue when more and more of his sons and daughters got to stud.

One person with great faith in the strength of Magic Sprite to achieve is Robert Mccolm who has Mr Shire (Magic Sprite-Slick Exit by Bit Chili) at stud after a fine race career.

He raced 38 times for 19 wins and 11 placings earning $60,000. He was a powerhouse on the track making the Chairman's Cup at Wentworth Park but winning from 500m to 700m against the very best. His wins came at The Gardens, Gosford, Maitland and he was a multiple Wenty winner.
He came from a litter of 11 named offspring of which nine were winners.

Dam Slick Exit was a winner at The Gardens and Gosford and in two litters to Magic Sprite has also produced Mister Cowora (9 wins, $24,000) and Forced Exit (9 wins, $19,000) etc.

It is Mr Shire's pedigree that will attract broodbitch owners.

He has many, many options open to him and most of them are highly proven.

This is the direct damline of Dennis Reid's famous, famous Travelling Girl that continues to thrive today decades after her reign as a broodbitch of unquestionable dominance.

Mr Shire is an absolute MUST to be mated to bitches by Barcia Bale.

This cross is hugely proven with his sire Magic Sprite, the Qld greyhound of the year and twice G1 winner Fast Times being by Barcia Bale from a daughter of Magic Sprite.

The recent G1 Peter Mosman winner Start A Riot is by Magic Sprite from a daughter of Barcia Bale, and so is Sydney Cup finalist Radar Gunn.

It's a “no brainer” to put Barcia Bale bitches to Mr Shire.

The fact Mr Shire has Bit Chili as his damsire will open a number of opportunities for broodbitch owners. Bit Chili is a very, very good broodbitch sire but he has always worked exceptionally well when mating bitches by Brett Lee or with Brett Lee up very close in their pedigree.

A fabulous potential cross for Mr Shire based on this fact could be to bitches by Lochinvar Marlow who is by Bombastic Shiraz (sire of Bit Chili) and out of a daughter of Brett Lee and who also traces directly along his damline to Travelling Girl.

Some years ago Dennis Reid duplicated the Travelling Girl family to produce Group stars like G2 Qld Derby winner Road Closed and a number of others.
Brett Lee can be picked up in Cosmic Rumble, Oaks Road, Zulu Zeus etc. How many bitches will be found with Brett Lee in the make-up … a staggering number.

Mr Shire's third dam Time Traveller is bred on a reverse cross of New Tears/Brother Fox to Brett Lee.

Mr Shire should also be mated to bitches with MORE of Bombastic Shiraz. That's because he carries a cross of Placard up close in his damline. Placard is the sire of Mr Shire's second mother.

Placard is bred identically to Bombastic Shiraz's dam Bombastic Blonde and this cross is found in a number of G1 stars headed by National Sprint champ Metz Magic.

Surf Lorian also does spectacularly well when he links up with both Magic Sprite and Placard. Check out the pedigree of Cyndie's Magic (45 wins, $425,000).

Daughters of Collision will also suit Mr Shire. That's because he is bred on a reverse cross of Malawi's prince and New Years. Collision has been champion sire for years and many, many of his best progeny brought in a cross of Token Prince.

By putting daughters of Collision to Mr Shire, this hugely successful cross will be brought back in … but in reverse.

An interesting mating to Mr Shire would be to daughters of My Bro Fabio. Mr Shire's damsire Bit Chili carries Chili Berger in her damline. Chili Berger is a virtual sister to Bright Ebony who is found in Fabio's damsire.

Mr Shire has only one outcross influence in his first five generations.

Irish stud success, Aussie-bred Royal Impact is by Cry Havoc from the Travelling Girl damline. He has been a G1 sire in Ireland. Obviously putting Irish lines to Mr Shire will also help him succeed at stud.

Mr Shire has no Awesome Assassin in his pedigree and both Leprechaun Yap and Bombastic Blonde in his pedigree are bred along almost identical lines to this great sire.

He too is found everywhere in pedigrees.

Mr Shire's pedigree also has much in common with Mogambo. It would be interesting to mate bitches with Mogambo in their make-up to Mr Shire.

Another interesting pedigree match could be daughters of Keybow who also brings in a cross of Placard, but also a cross of Big Daddy Cool and his half brother Brett Lee.

Many of Keybow's progeny show great pace to compliment the strength in Mr Shire.
