Palawa Reminds All Who's King In Bold Trease

PALAWA King produced a remarkable last to first performance to annex the Group 1 Bold Trease (715m) in emphatic fashion at Sandown Park on Saturday night.

And in the process the superstar son of Feral Franky reminded the greyhound racing world that he firmly holds the mantle as the sport's number one stayer.

Chalking up a third group 1 victory for the year, a feat which will have him front and centre in NSW Greyhound of the Year discussions, Palawa King was simply sublime in a race where he was somewhat shunned by punters.

In fact his $6.50 starting quote is the longest price he's started in his last 28 appearances, spanning back to March this year.

But after flopping out from box seven and taking the right runs in transit, there was only one greyhound you wanted to be on heading down the straight the first time and that was the ‘King'.

Showing his customary remarkable speed, Palawa King surged past leaders Get Ready Dora and Zoha Bale before hitting the front turning for home and scoring by 1 ½ lengths.

Finishing runner-up was fellow NSW-trained stayer Ritza Piper to continue her hugely successful Melbourne spring campaign while Zoha Bale stuck on for third.

The winning time was 41.75.

For Jack and Maree Smith, Palawa King's stellar 2023 continues what's been a remarkable few years for the Forbes based training combination with greyhounds the ilk of Feral Franky, Jungle Deuce and Miss Ezmae winning big races all around the country.

And with Palawa King's record now boasting 22 wins from 53 starts and a further 18 placings, Saturday night's Bold Trease heroics saw his stake money soar to $666,000, a figure which looks set to only balloon in the coming months.

Along with his Bold Trease triumph, Palawa King's other group 1 successes have come in the Group 1 Queensland Cup at Albion Park and the Group 1 National Distance Championship at The Meadows.
