Sharp Keeping A Lid On Things With Morton

EXCITING youngster Morton could be aimed at the South Australian Derby if he continues to develop as expected by the Sharp kennel at Lara.

EXCITING youngster Morton could be aimed at the Group 3 South Australian Derby in September if he continues to develop as expected by the formidable Jessica and Jason Sharp kennel at Lara.

Morton (Tommy Shelby-Chloe Louise) has raced twice for wins at The Meadows in 29.89 on debut and last Saturday night in 29.77 leading throughout both times and racing away for easy wins.

“Our long-time owner Darrell Heathcote bought two from the litter as pups,” said Jason.

“We broke them in and pre-trained them and they were fair at education.

“But a couple of months ago Morton trialled 30.10 around The Meadows and that was very handy.

“But, we decided he was far too young to start racing so we put him aside for a few weeks.”

Jason says the dog has done so well since his return to training.

“He's got a real maturity about him,” he said.

“But, we have got to be down to earth about him. We don't want to put too much pressure on him.

“The Derby is coming up at Angle Park in September and that could be a target for him if he keeps progressing.

“There isn't much else around at the moment for a very young dog.”

Sharp said the other pup from the litter is back in training after a slight injury problem and he had broken in the better of the two.

“They are very good chasers, both of them,” he said.

Dam, Chloe Louise, is a Moreira-Trip To Cairns bitch which won eight races.

The Tommy Shelby is her first litter to race.
