FAST emerging Tomahawk Hayze is on trial for a Winter Carnival campaign when he runs in the Legacy Classic (520m) at Albion Park on Thursday night.

The son of Aston Dee Bee and Merlot Hayze stamped himself a Winter Carnival contender when he won at headquarters in 29.62 on April 13 leading throughout to beat Showdown by almost five lengths.

Nathan Trigg bred and owns the dog who is trained at Atkinsons Dam by long-time training star Sandra Hunt.

Tomahawk Hayze has won eight of his past nine starts.

“Thursday night is his real test,” admitted Nathan.

“He's up against a really quality field of local sprinters. It will give us the perfect guide as to how he can perform during the up-coming Winter Carnival.”

Among those rivals is Group 1 winner Hello Mike, Group 1 placed Special Cyndie, Ipswich track record holder Blue Hornet etc.

“He's a front runner and will need to lead to beat such a high class field,” said Nathan.

“His first metre is not great but after that he explodes.

“Our immediate plans are to head towards the QGOLD races and then look at the other big sprints during the carnival.

“The $1 million Brisbane Cup is an obvious target.”

FIELDS AND FORM ALBION PARK THURSDAY NIGHT

Tomahawk Hayze is part of a fabulous litter that has won 82 races and $284,000 for the Trigg/Hunt combination.

“Bartel Hayze is three or four lengths quicker than all of them, but he's not the complete race package,” said Nathan.

“All honours to Sandra for the tireless work she has done with this litter and the results she has got.

“She has developed Tomahawk Hayze throughout his career into a 29.62 winner.”

He has won 15 races and earned $71,000.

The dog broke a tibia as a pup.

“He was three months old and in the house at the time,” said Nathan.

“He jumped off the couch and landed wrong breaking the tibia. While his brothers and sisters went to the rearing paddock, he stayed in the house for a couple of months and recovered.”

He has been a classy sprinter throughout his career finishing second in the Emerging Origin Stars, third in the Publicans Cup and been a finalist in the G3 Rising Stars and Listed Silver Dollars.

The Triggs have a 10-month old litter from their dam by Fernando Bale.
