Carroway An Afterthought For July Maiden

ALLAN and Carol Oshyer were heading to the Grafton carnival for a holiday and tossed in their five dogs in the hope of winning a race or two.

ALLAN and Carol Oshyer were heading to the Grafton carnival for a couple of weeks holiday and tossed in all five dogs still in their kennels in the hope of winning a race or two.

One of those is Carroway, a Zambora Brockie and Cruisy's Angel dog, the only maiden among the five.

Allan, 74 and boasting 50 plus years in greyhound racing, had no intention of taking on the potential stars all aiming for the rich July Maiden (450m) feature of the Grafton carnival.

“I hadn't even trialled him on the track,” said Allan.

But it mattered not to Carroway, the Brad Turner-owned youngster, scoring in his heat by almost 10 lengths in 25.62 at the juicy odds of $11.

“It was a surprise to me,” said Allan.

Carroway had been beaten in two 288m maiden stars at Ipswich before heading to Grafton but that was back in May.

“All he got to do was have a walk around the track prior to the heats on Sunday,” said Allan.

“You would think he will have to make improvement from that run on the track.”

Oshyer has trained a few dogs for Brad and his syndicate of owners including Miss Maddy Lee, the winner of 10 races.

“They also sent me up this dog's sister, Jamboree Jean and she has won three in a row at Capalaba, but the dog is better,” said Allan.

Carroway has come up with box five for the final which will be run on Wednesday week.

“I wasn't even going to put him in the race,” said Allan.

Quickest of the five maiden heats was Evelyn Harris' Lee's Tiger, a son of Sennachie, which went 25.39 as a $19 outsider.
